Our mission at West End Distillery (formerly Fifth Element Spirits) is to use the finest, locally-sourced fruits, grains, roots, and herbs to produce top-shelf spirits and that embody flavors and styles uniquely Appalachian. After a long renovation & permit process, we began production in 2018, a block from the West End Ciderhouse, in the westside neighborhood of Athens, Ohio.
West End Cider House
The West End Ciderhouse isn’t just a unique place in Athens, it would be a unique establishment anywhere. At the woman owned and managed Ciderhouse, if it’s a liquid and can be made in-house, it is. From ciders to spirits made by Ohio fermentation expert Kelly Sauber and mentor Shen Cook at sister company West End Distillery, to house made cocktail bitters, shrubs and syrups mixed by bartenders passionate about their craft, there’s an unmistakable stamp of quality on every drink. Even the guest product options are some of the highest quality you can find in town. A highly recommended stop during Brew Week, or any time of the year.
The Pigskin Bar and Grille
BBQ and beer make for a great week at The Pigskin
What goes better than beer and BBQ? How about a full-blown pig roast?
Each year, the Pigskin Bar & Grill hosts the aforementioned porcine cookout, and their regular menu is always full of fantastic BBQ. Since this is Ohio Brew Week, you know there’s plenty going on there every day.
A great place year-round, The Pigskin is the premier bar and grill restaurant in Athens, located in the heart of uptown.
They pride themselves on the ability to please every customer every day. Whether you come in for a meal or just drinks and good times with friends, they’ll treat you right.
The Pigskin elevates the idea of ordinary bar food. Their preparation and ingredients make the old favorites into something special again.
Don’t miss out on the annual Brew Week favorites. Make it down to The Pigskin Bar & Grill while you’re in Athens this July.
Casa Nueva
Local food, brews and ideals
Established in 1985, Casa Nueva nestled itself firmly in the hearts of Southeast Ohioans with its unique take on Mexican-inspired dishes and community-focused business practices.
If you ask an Athenian what makes Athens “Athens,” nine times out of ten Casa Nueva would be part of their answer.
At Casa Nueva, the connection between local food providers, worker-shareholders and customers is put front-and-center, providing a fulfilling dining and drinking experience that showcases the values of a town.
The worker-owned cooperative restaurant embodied movements such as locally sourced food for decades before “locavore” was a buzz-word. You can taste the dedication in every house made salsa, tortilla and albóndiga.
Throughout the year, observe the changing seasons in Casa Nueva’s rotating menu. In Spring, find salsa verde or pesto made with ramps (a forageable, deliciously succulent wild leek-esque plant native to Appalachia). In Winter, a selection of the most hearty root vegetables makes the perfect filling for a seasonal burrito or quesadilla.
The menu changes frequently, so make sure to stop in during Brew Week and see the offerings.
You’ll be sure to find a large selection of Ohio craft brew, as Casa Nueva’s taps are all-Ohio, all year. At Casa, they like to tell guests “it’s always Brew Week here.” To really mix up your experience, try a specialty beer cocktail. It will expand your horizons on what brews can do.
When in Athens, listen to the locals. It wouldn’t be a trip here without spending some time at Casa Nueva.

Land-Grant Brewing Company
Land-Grant Brewing Company is a commercial brewery and taproom, located in the East Franklinton neighborhood in Columbus, Ohio. It is a production facility producing kegs and cans of craft beer for the Ohio market, with an onsite taproom and beer garden that serves fresh beer in a comfortable atmosphere.
“We Make Beer For You.”
Land-Grant brings craft and Columbus pride to Brew Week
Land-Grant Brewing is named for the Morrill Act of 1862 which set aside federal land in each state for public universities. The love of a certain Columbus-based school inspired the name, and the love of the city itself led the owners of Land-Grant to set up shop in the area.
Luckily for us they don’t hoard all of that good beer up in Columbus!
Land-Grant has cranked out a huge range of beers. Their core line (1862 Kolsch, to name one) are dependable go-tos. There’s always a Land-Grant six-pack you would feel great reaching for in a grocery store. But you don’t want to miss the exciting collaborations they get into, such as their yearly partnership with Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams. 2019’s collab beer is “Splendid Berry Brut” inspired by the annual Strawberry harvest and brewed to pair with Jeni’s Strawberry Buttermilk ice cream. Or just nice, fresh strawberries in general.
From kolsch to a strawberry brut, needless to say Land-Grant can produce fantastic examples in a wide variety of styles.
If you’re looking for a great taproom experience in Columbus, check out Land-Grant’s location in Franklinton, right across from BrewDog. Land-Grant vastly expanded their outside patio area in order to host outdoor events. This is a serious summer hangout spot.
Land-Grant even has a taproom at John Glenn International Airport. It’s arguably the best place to wait for your flight.
Of course, you can find a range of Land-Grant brews in six-packs and on draft around Columbus, and right here in Athens for Ohio Brew Week.
Devil’s Kettle Brewing
Head to Columbus Road for Devilishly good brews
For years, Devil’s Kettle owner and brewer Cameron Fuller won award after award at the Ohio Brew Week Homebrew Competition.
As the accolades piled up, Cameron kept being pushed in one direction– open his own brewery.
Thankfully for Athens (and Ohio) he did just that in June 2015. He took his recipe book and worked to scale up those decorated brews on a state-of-the-art system, while creating some new ones in the process.
While the brewery’s name is somewhat sinister, Fuller is also fan of understated and approachable beer styles such as English Milds and dark lagers, providing a refreshing respite from the world of extreme brews. But he can do those too. Just watch for the range of unique offerings and barrel-aged beers he’s sure to release this year.
Since opening, Devil’s Kettle has added a beautiful patio, installed a solar panel array beside the brewery and added more beer taps (including two nitro) along with nonalcoholic offerings such as house-brewed root beer.
It’s the perfect spot to escape uptown, enjoy the patio and try out Devil Dogs for delicious hot dogs, sausages and amazing pirogi specials all week!
If you come into town on Columbus Road, Devil’s Kettle will be the first brewery you see. Just look for the devilishly red building. And make sure to follow them on social media so you don’t miss any special releases during the week!
