THANK YOU for partying with us! We know Last Call had some ups and downs, but what 21st birthday party doesn't?!?! We had an amazing time drinking and partying with you all for our Last Call event on the bricks of Athens, Ohio! We are already missing it and looking forward to seeing you all next year!
THANK YOU to all the volunteers, breweries, bands, venues, sponsors, food trucks, vendors, guests for helping to make our party a great time in spite of some thunderstorms and heat.
We have wrapped the 21st Ohio Brew Week and something that is still stirring in all of us is appreciation!
It’s wild to think that more than two decades ago Jon Sparhawk told Dan Gates to create a week long celebration of craft beer and they DID IT! The FIRST week-long craft brew celebration in the nation started right here in this little town we call Athens, Ohio! And year after year thousands of us fill our bars and breweries and restaurants and partake in the celebrating that idea and what this great town has to offer.
We had our setbacks with the weather impacting many of OBW’s signature events in different ways. We learned more about AQI than we ever hoped to know, watched lightning delay our favorite bands, felt 90+ degree days melt our faces, but through it all everyone kept their smiles!
The reunions still happened, the music played on and we all raised a glass to one of the best parties around, Ohio Brew Week. And we appreciate YOU for being part of it, we do this all for the fans of Ohio Brew Week cause you’re the absolute f**king best!
This will be the last time OBW Executive Director, Brandon Thompson will be doing Last Call and Brew BQ as he will be stepping away from those responsibilities. We hope you’ve had fun the last 11 Brew Weeks on court street. It had to happen and, yes, he’s feeling a certain way about it. But don’t worry you’re in good hands! He’s just passing the baton just like Dan Gates and Weston Lombard did before him to allow for the next step!

Happy Jon Sparhawk Day! Wear a Hawaiian shirt and do something positive for someone to honor of one of our founders and the inspiration for Ohio Brew Week, Jon Sparhawk.
20 years ago, Sparhawk, a local restaurant owner, saw the growing Ohio beer scene as a way to spur business in Athens during the summer months.
Sparhawk passed away suddenly just before the second-ever Ohio Brew Week. His name and influence are memorialized in the “Sparbock” beer, brewed by Jackie O’s for Ohio Brew Week, but is now a new, special beer brewed each year in collaboration with Ohio University’s brewing class. Jon was a beloved Athens resident, highly involved and known by brewers all over the state.
“We know everyone enjoys the weekends,” said Thompson. “But Jon came up with Brew Week to boost business in Athens during the summer, and that means weekdays, too.
Join us, Monday July 13 5-7pm, for the Annual Keg Tapping of Ohio Brew Week at the Jackie O's TAPROOM (25 Campbell St). Hear from our director and organizers of OBW and join us for a toast and a keg tapping of this year's beer, Whole Lotta Colada.
A little history of the keg tapping.... In 2023, a new Tradition was been born with the blessing of the Sparhawk family. Rather than brewing Sparbock every year, Jackie O’s has collaborated with Ohio University’s Chemistry Department’s summer brewing class to pick a recipe winner to be the new Brew Week Brew. This brew will honor Jon Sparhawk in a new way by allowing different classes to come up with new flavors that are released during Ohio Brew Week.
This year’s winner is Alex Talbert, Russ College of Eng. His winning recipe was: Whole Lotta Colada – A NE-style hazy IPA with pineapple and coconut…think beach vibes!
